Small towns like Altavista are vanishing all across America. When downtowns are neglected, it’s not long before outside investors, new opportunities and generations of residents move elsewhere. A vibrant downtown community is critical to the health of the local economy. If we lose downtown Altavista, the future of our town and the surrounding communities are at stake.
Altavista On Track is a nationally accredited 501(c)3 nonprofit and an affiliate of the National Main Street and Virginia Main Street programs. In partnership with the Town of Altavista, we work to provide business assistance to downtown businesses while also organizing family-friendly community events that bring people downtown throughout the year.
Since our inception in 2007, we have already secured more than $3.1 million in funding for the Downtown district. This is used to bring targeted benefits into the local downtown economy by providing access to an extensive DHCD and National Main Street resource network, which remains focused on strengthening support for local small businesses and creating a vibrant downtown that attracts visitors and residents alike.
Our accreditation signifies that Altavista on Track is a recognized leader among the national network of more than 1,200 Main Street America neighborhoods and communities across the country. What do we all share in common? A commitment to creating high-quality hometown locations and events, as well as building strong communities through preservation-based economic development. Accredited Main Street programs are required annually to meet a set of National Accreditation Standards of Performance as outlined by the National Main Street Center.
